After 27 years of marriage, Bill and Melinda Gates are getting a divorce.
“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decisions to end our marriage,” Melinda announced in a lengthy Twitter post.
“Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives,” she continued.
Bill then confirmed her exact statement by sharing it on his own Twitter account.
In 2019, things seemed to be getting better for the couple that previously had their share of challenges. Melinda told the Sunday Times, “We’ve just gotten to a point in life where Bill and I can both laugh about more things. And, believe me, I can remember some days that were so incredibly hard in our marriage where you thought, ‘Can I do this?”
The two have certainly done a lot together in their time as husband and wife. They are the founders of one of the largest charitable organizations on the planet: The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
In 2010 they both signed the Giving Pledge, a pledge that they would give at least half of their net worth to help with disaster relief efforts, women empowerment efforts, refugee assistance, and more.
In 2017, Melinda said all of these efforts showed the strength of their partnership. “It’s important to both of us that the world understands we are running this place together.” She explained, “This is our joint values being played out in the world.”
During the pandemic, they donated $1.75 billion to try and find and find, fund, and distribute a vaccine to find an end to the threat COVID-19.
Now that they split, we can only hope they both keep contributing to greater causes. But for now, Melinda says it is a time for reflection: “We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.”
