In a video announcement accompanied by multiple tweets posted early Wednesday morning, Demi Lovato opened up about their nonbinary identity.
Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, & everything in between. pic.twitter.com/HSBcfmNruo— Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) May 19, 2021
The “Anyone” singer captioned the post, “Every day we wake up, we are given another opportunity & chance to be who we want & wish to be. I’ve spent the majority of my life growing in front of all of you… you’ve seen the good, the bad, & everything in between.”
In the video itself, Lovato shares that they have been doing “healing and self-reflective work” over the past year and that they will be using they/them pronouns moving forward to “best reflect the fluidity [they] feel in [their] gender expression.”
In addition to other personal revelations shared in Lovato’s recent documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, the singer also revealed new insights into their sexuality and identity in an Entertainment Weekly interview following their split with ex-fiancee Max Ehrich.
“Regardless if drama is happening or not, I am too gay to marry a man right now.”
On the subject of Lovato’s journey to self-understanding, they re-iterate on Twitter that they are not a “spokesperson.”
Lovato, who has spoken previously about their struggles with mental health and being in the public eye, also indicated that they felt their life journey was as much for people on the “other side of the camera” as it was for themselves. In line with this idea, Lovato encouraged fans to “please keep living in your truths.”
“I’m doing this for those out there that haven’t been able to share who they truly are with their loved ones,” said the singer.
