Elizabeth Olsen declares her support for fellow avenger Scarlett Johansson.
The Wandavision star was asked her opinion on Scarlett Johansson’s legal battle with Disney in a joint interview with Vanity Fair. “I think she’s so tough,” Olsen said, “and literally when I read that I was like, ‘Good for you Scarlett.'”
Johansson is suing Disney over a dispute about her earnings for the movie Black Widow as she claims the entertainment giant breached the contract by not releasing the movie specifically in theaters. With part of her compensation tied to the box office performance of the film, and allegedly not receiving due compensation for the performance of the movie on the streaming platform Disney+.
Olsen touches on this in her response as well saying, “When it comes to actors and their earnings, I mean, that’s just, that’s just all contracts. So it’s either in the contract or it’s not.”
She then goes onto express concern regarding movies being released on streaming platforms and the effect it can have on small budget films. ” I would like to see art films and art house theaters. And so I do worry about that, and people having to keep these theaters alive,” the actress stated. “But I do think it’s going to be how it kind of used to be when studios owned theaters.”
This is the first instance of a fellow Marvel cast member backing Johansson publicly, and it comes as a shock to some considering Olsen’s position at Disney as her show Wandavision is hosted on their streaming platform.
However, Olsen wasn’t the only celebrity to speak out in support. In the same interview with Vanity Fair, Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis praised Black Widow’s legal move as “appropriately bad-ass and on-brand.”
