Grimes Shares News Of Second Child & Better Relationship With Elon Musk

Grimes and Elon Musk have kept their second child a secret since December 2021, when she was born by a surrogate. The Canadian singer and SpaceX founder named their daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, or Y for short.

Grimes revealed the truth about the baby when a Vanity Fair interviewer visited her home for an unrelated article and heard a baby crying upstairs. The mother had already confirmed her first child, X Æ A-XII, was with Musk, 50.

When asked why she tried to conceal her second child’s existence, Grimes, 33, said, “I don’t know. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

Musk and Grimes officially split in September 2021, but appear to be on better terms now.

“I would probably refer to him as my boyfriend, but we’re very fluid,” Grimes told Vanity Fair. “We live in separate houses. We’re best friends. We see each other all the time… We just have our own thing going on, and I don’t expect other people to understand it.”

When they initially broke up, Musk told Page Six, “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently, and are on great terms.”

According to the Tesla founder, his work requires him to travel often while Grimes works primarily in L.A., but the two often meet in-person to co-parent. Grimes added in her Vanity Fair interview they are happy, free, and better than they’ve ever been.

The reunited couple named their daughter for a mix of mystical ideas. In texts to the Vanity Fair reporter, Grimes said, “Exa is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS (the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second). Dark, meanwhile, is ‘the unknown. People fear it but truly it’s the absence of photons. Dark matter is the beautiful mystery of our universe.”

The “Oblivion” singer added the last part of her daughters name, pronounced “sigh-deer-ee-el”, refers to the true deep space time of the universe and is inspired by her favorite Lord of the Rings character, Galadriel.

The family likely isn’t done growing, as Grimes said they’ve always wanted to have 3 or 4 children.
