Johnny Weir Responds to Criticism about His Look at Tokyo Olympics Closing Ceremony

Former Olympic figure skater, Johnny Weir is defending his style after a social media user called Weir out for not fitting into their views of “biblical masculinity.”

The co-host of NBC’s Closing Ceremony coverage posted a photo of his eye-catching look and hairstyle for the special event. Known for his unique looks, his hair was styled in a bouffant bun, completed with a blinged-out hairpiece in the shape of the Olympic rings.

After sharing the photo of himself, supporters praised Weir for his inventive style. However, Jenna Ellis, known for her work for former President Donald Trump, wasn’t impressed with Weir.

Taking to Twitter she tweeted, “#WokeOlympics closing ceremony clown. How appropriate and utterly embarrassing.”

She also retweeted the retired figure skater’s photo and added, “Bring back the days when boys cared about growing up to be actual men. Biblical masculinity over woke fragility.”

Weir respond to Ellis by saying, “The man I’ve grown into is a human that embraces the strength of the man & woman who raised me to be myself.” Continuing, “If you feel squashed by the boot of someone else’s beliefs, remember you are free to live your life the way YOU believe. Also, religion isn’t an excuse for hate.”

The two-time Olympic figure skater co-hosted the broadcast alongside Tara Lipinski and broadcaster Terry Gannon.

Showing support for Weir, celebrity Leslie Jones took to Twitter. The former Saturday Night Live standout posted footage of Weir his co-hosts, adding, “Johnny and Tara never f–king disappoints!!”
