Lil Nas X found out the hard way that live TV stops for no one this weekend when his pants ripped during his Saturday Night Live debut.
The social media comedian-turned-musician was performing his single, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name),” when he noticed something was wrong. “I’m pretty much going down the pole, doing my little sexy drop down and boom, I feel air,” he told Jimmy Fallon during The Tonight Show on Monday. “I’m like, ‘Okay, there’s definitely a breeze going on.’ And I also felt some popping still happening while I was down there.”
The maneuver in question was a move from his music video where he performs on a stripper pole before sliding down. It was a move that Fallon showed in his rehearsal footage.
Instead of continuing his dance afterward, Nas X covers himself with his hands for the rest of the performance. “It was perfect timing,” he told Fallon. “If they would’ve ripped any other time during the performance, everything…over.”
The accident has caused a bit of controversy on Twitter with some saying the rapper planned it as a publicity stunt. Considering what Nas has done in the past, it wouldn’t seem that uncharacteristic.
Lil Nas X has since denied that the malfunction was deliberate, which is why he offered to show the rehearsal footage. “I want everyone who thought it was a publicity stunt to see that it was not. I would never rip my pants in public on purpose,” the musician explained.
Now that his SNL debut is behind him, Lil Nas X can return to focusing on his music. Lil Nas X’s most recent single, “Sun Goes Down,” is his most personal song yet. “My entire life has led up to this moment of this album. It’s honest. It’s 100% me.”
The song was released as both a single and music video on Friday. Fans will have to wait until the summer to get their hands on his full debut album, Montero.
