Mae Whitman Reveals She is A Proud Member of The Bi+ Community

On Monday, television and movie star Mae Whitman took to Twitter to praise Disney Channel Show, The Owl House, when she revealed she herself is a part of the Bi+ community.

The animated show is receiving all sorts of praise for its inclusive message. Mae Whitman, who voices Amity, decided it was time to join in on the praise.

“Just taking a moment to say I am SO proud to be even a small part of a show like The Owl House,” the star started before going onto say. “Being pansexual myself, I wish I had such incredible characters like Amity and Luz in my life when I was growing up. Queer representation is sososo important :,) keep it up world! #TOH.”

She then tweeted a glaad resource designed to promote the awareness and acceptance of the bi community. Stating in the tweet, “I know ppl might be unfamiliar with what pansexural means; for me it means I know I can fall in love with people of all genders. This is the word that first me best and I’m proud+happy to be a part of the Bi+ community :,)”

Fans of the Whitman will remember her as Katara from Avatar, Annie Marks in Good Girls, and Tinkerbell in the Tinkerbell series.

Her Disney project The Owl House is breaking down barriers of all kinds, featuring Disney’s first bisexual main character. A 14-year-old girl named Luz is voiced by Sarah-Nicole Robles.

The show’s executive producer is bi herself and pushed hard for the show to have a character representative of the community, despite Disney’s early insistence she couldn’t. “I want to write a bi character dammit!” She stated in a tweet from August 2020 that has now been deleted. “Luckily my stubbornness paid off and now I am very supported by current Disney leadership.”
