The Handmaid’s Tale and Orange Is The New Black star Samira Wiley welcomed her first child, a baby girl named George Elizabeth, with wife Lauren Morelli back in April.
In a Mother’s Day celebration post on Instagram, Wiley surprised her fans with the announcement of the birth of her daughter while paying tribute to the mother of her child.
“Happy 1st Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, who four weeks ago today after laboring for almost 3 days gave birth to our first child—our gorgeous daughter, George,” Wiley wrote.
The couple hadn’t previously announced their pregnancy publically.
“Welcome to the world, babygirl. We love you and thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for,” Wiley continued.
Wiley has come a long way since being accidentally outed by a fellow cast member from Orange Is the New Black during the first season. According to an interview on the Nancy podcast, she credits her character from the show, Poussey, for helping her come to terms with her sexuality and learning to love herself.
Morelli posted the same photo, reflexing on the impact of her daughter’s birth.
“4 weeks ago today, our daughter came into the world and changed everything,” she wrote. “We are so happy, so grateful, and so tired. George Elizabeth.”
George Elizabeth was born on April 11, 2021.
Wiley and Morelli got engaged in 2016 and married in 2017.
