Simone Biles Marks Balance Beam Comeback With Bronze

After a turbulent Olympics for the world’s greatest gymnast. Simone Biles has returned to the podium in the same Olympics she had previously withdrawn from.

Biles’ struggles with her mental health in these Summer Games have been well documented. But for Biles, this wasn’t a new thing and she marked her surprise return to the competition in style. Taking home a bronze medal that is just a bit sweeter to her than any of her others. “It means more than all of the golds because I’ve pushed through so much the last five years and last week while I’ve even been here.”

Biles may be one of the United States’ most decorated gymnasts, but even she admits she didn’t think she would see the Olympic competition again after stepping away from the competition due to a mental block.

“My mental and physical health is above all medals that I could ever win. So to be clear, to do beam, which I didn’t think I was going to be, just meant the world to be back out there,” Biles explained. “And I wasn’t expecting to walk away with the medal. I was just going out there doing this for me.”

Biles admits that both she and her teammates were concerned for her before the team competition that she ultimately withdrew from. The main concern being that hesitation and fear could lead to serious physical injury due to the precise and dangerous nature of gymnastics. With Biles admitting that while twisting in the air she had lost her sense of up from down.

A decision that was well received by many and support for Biles poured in. Biles took to Instagram to thank those who supported her, writing “the outpouring love & support I’ve received has made me realize I’m more than my accomplishments and gymnastics which I never truly believed before.”
